A Grenadier Guards corporal in RAC helmet, battledress and skeleton webbing with the special low-hung RAC pistol holster. The shoulder braces were supposed to be worn to allow casualties to be pulled up through hatches. In reality, crews avoided anything which might snag while bailing out of a tank, and wore only a pistol belt and holster, often the standard flapped type. (© Imperial War Museum, TR 1410)

CHURCHILL CUTAWAY

JOHN FOTHERGILL, 107 REGT RAC

John Fothergill was born in 1916. He was conscripted into The King’s Own Royal Regiment (Lancaster), an infantry battalion converted to tanks in November 1941, and redesignated as 107 Regt RAC. He was selected for officer training, and was a lieutenant commanding a troop when he first saw action after D-Day.

In July 1944, his Mk VII tank ‘Briton’ and its crew were the subject for an army photographer. The photos were widely published, and are preserved in the Imperial War Museum Collections (IWM B7601–B7645). Fothergill seems to have taken over as squadron commander, presumably as an acting replacement since he was not promoted. He was killed in August 1944 when his tank was penetrated by an 88mm shell.
